He moved to the German village of Kronenschieldt (sometimes spelled Cronenschieldt), near Leipzig, during the Thirty Years' War and married Maria Hahn, from Annaburg in Saxony-Anhalt. The family adopted the village's name as their surname. Their son, Johannes Caspar Richter von Kronenschieldt, was born in Leipzig in 1661. After being educated briefly at the University of Leipzig, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts and married Elizabeth Allen on December 5, 1694 in Lynn, Massachusetts. Their children began the Crowninshield family known today. Although the family's roots are Danish and German, most of the more recent lines of the Crowninshield family in Massachusetts are primarily of English stock. Richard Crowninshield, youngest son of Johannes moved his young family to Providence, Rhode Island between. The birth of his children James, Richard, Sarah, and Bethia are all recorded in the Rhode Island records. Richards's oldest son James moved to Vermont and settled in the Guilford/Hindsdale area. There are land purchase records there for him. Guilford/Hindsdale are in close proximity to Brattleboro and Dummerston, areas where the Wilders owned land, worked and traveled to visit their extended family in Petersham, Massachusettes.
