John Crowninshield WilderJohn Crowninshield Wilder was born September 13, 1827, in New York, the first born son of Elias Wilder and Turzah Fuller. He gets his unique middle name from his father's mother, Dolly Crowninshield. Dolly comes from the infamous Crowninshields family of Massachusetts.
The lineage of John Crowninshield Wilder is as follows: John Crowninshield moved west with his family, settling in Van Buren County, Iowa, where he met Hannah Hanes. Hannah Hanes was born May 18, 1831. She was the daughter of David Hanes and his wife Hannah.** John and Hannah were married on July 28, 1851 in Van Buren County, IA. They had 8 children. |

In 1848 Gold was discovered in California. History tells us many people were motivated to "Go West" in hopes of striking it rich. In 1853, John made his first trip to California around Cape Horn joining many hopeful others at trying his hand at mining. He minned in Tehama and Siskiyou Counties. Not much is known of the time he spent in California. He returned to Iowa in 1856 and soon after moved his family to Missouri, where his third child was born.
1861 war breaks out between the states. John joins to fight on the side of the Union. He musters in on April 6th, 1862 at Fairmount, Mo. While he is fighting in the war, his wife and children are living with his brother James Hill Wilder and his family. He fought with the 2nd Missouri Cavalry, and was honorably discharged April, 4th 1865 at St. Louis, Mo. As with most soldiers of that war, John contracted rheumatism, and being exposed to bad water, developed a sever case of dysentery, one which would plague him the rest of his life. John's brothers Geroge Fuller Wilder and Alonzo Parker "Lon" Wilder also fought in the Civil War. George Fuller enlisted from Putnam Co. MO and served under General Sherman. Alonzo Parker enrolled in the Union Army at Milan, MO. He also served under General Sherman. Alonzo later moved to Oregon, finally settling in the state of Washington. We do not have much information on this family line, and would love to expand our section to include these 2 brothers. Unfortunately the "Book of Wilders" does not have any information on Elias's son Elias Artemas Wilder. We are interested in anyone who might be able to provide information on him and his family. In 1870, John Crowninshield Wilder gathers up his family and boards a train for California. He will join his father, mother and brother James Hill Wilder.* in Silvyville/Dixon, California. John, wife Hannah Hanes, and their children, settled for a while in Paskenta, California, where John owned a blacksmith shop. They later moved to Ono, Shasta County, California, where he continued his trade as a black smith, as well as farmed and worked as a carpenter. In the late 1800's his son William had to take over his business as Blacksmith due to the extent of his ill health. John was a voter in Tehama County, August 16, 1892, and transferred to Shasta County February 27, 1894. John Crowninshield Wilder passed away on February 5, 1896, in Ono, California. His wife Hannah Hanes passed away September 13, 1879, also in Ono, California. Both John and Hannah are burried in a private cemetery in Igo, California.
