<image:title>Our Wilder Family - Reverence for Reverend Wilder</image:title>
<image:caption>I admire Reverend Moses Wilder for the work he did in the 1880’s capturing and documenting the Wilder family line. He gave many Wilder's the opportunity to share their stories, tell of their loved one’s births, deaths and accomplishments. He searched out to missing family lines and preserved for generations the legacy of Thomas Wilder in America. He did the difficult work, without computer, the telephone, DNA or the Mormons, and we are truly thankful.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For over 70 years Wilders have held good old fashioned family reunions and picnics in the area of Chico and Corning California. This year (2024) we will be moving the annual reunion to Red Bluff, California. We are looking forward to seeing our Wilder cousins and friends again this year. Note the photo you see here is from the first Wilder Reunion at Bidwell Park in Chico, California. Perhaps you recognize your family member. Read more about this years reunion.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Wilder Family - Wilder Cabin in the Woods</image:title>
<image:caption>James Elias Wilder was a true pioneer who carved out a living for his family through hard work and grit, a trait inherent in Wilders. In the late 19th century, James and his eldest son Orenzo built a cabin in what is now known as the Mendocino National Forest. The family used the cabin as their summer camp and home while they herded their angora goats in the cool mountains of Northern California.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Journey West - Elias Wilder and his journey west.</image:title>
<image:caption>Elias Wilder was the Son of Artemas Wilder and Dolly Crowninshield. He had a twin brother James and a younger brother Artemas. Two older siblings died in infancy before he was born in 1808. Elias was born in1808 in Dummerston Vermont. He married Turzah (Teresa) Fuller in possibly around 1820. Shortly after marriage, Elias and Thurza, along Elias' father Artemas and mother Dolly, brother James and Artemas loaded up their wagons and left Vermont. We only know this through oral history and the 1800 census records that document their travels.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Elias and Turzah had 7 children. John Crowninshield Wilder born Sept. 13, 1827, New York State. We think the family settled for a bit in the south wester area of New York, as Artemas and/or his son Elias may have had cousins in that area. Ohio Alonzo Parker "Lon" Wilder born Sept. 17, 1844/46, Hancock Co. <image:title>John Crowninshield Wilder - John Crowninshield and Hannah Haines</image:title>
<image:caption>John Crowninshield Wilder was the eldest son of Elias and Turzah. They had traveled from Vermont to New York in the early 1820’s along with Elia’s parents, Artemas and Dolly Wilder, and his brothers Artemas Jr. and James. Land purchase records for Western New York show Artemas Wilder, John’s Grandfather purchasing lots 2 and 4 in 1824. The 1830 census record for Ashford, Cattaraugus, New York, list John’s father Elias and grandfather Artemas living one farm away from each other. John was born in 1827 and all future documents lists his birth place as New York, we believe it was most likely Ashford, but we don’t have any firm proof. Elias and Turzah gave John his Grandmother’s maiden name, Crowninshield, as his middle name. From the dates of his parents marriage and the subsequent births of his siblings, it is fair to say that John may not have been the first child born, but he was definitely the first that successfully made it past infancy. We don’t know anything about his childhood, but we know the family were famers and stock raisers and moved often looking for new opportunities to acquire good farm land. Artemas, Dolly, Elias, Turzah and John would pull up stakes in New York and move to Ohio sometime before 1839. The family is listed in the 1840 Wheeling, Guernsey, Ohio census. John is listed as age 13. He is living with his Father, Mother and siblings. It is in Ohio that his grandfather Artemas and grandmother Dolly would pass away. According to family stories and records, John learned carpentry and blacksmith skills and worked as a farm hand when needed. John even tried his hand at mining during the gold rush era of California. John Crowninshield Wilder and Hannah Hanes had 8 children.* Lydia Cordellia Wilder born Jul. 9, 1852, Independence, Ia. John David Wilder born Dec. 22, 1853, Independence, Ia. <image:title>James Hill Wilder - James Hill Wilder and Caroline Huntley</image:title>
<image:caption>James Hill Wilder traveled to California with his father Elias, mother Turzah, wife Caroline Huntley. He worked as a farmer and tried his hand at other labor's while raising his family in the Paskenta area of California. He and his older brother John C. Wilder were very close, even if there was at least 10 years difference between them. We believe it was John C. Wilder's suggestion that he, his parents and brother James move to California to settle in the area just outside of Sacramento, as John would have passed through this area as he went to mine in Tehema County in the early 1850's. James Hill Wilder died in 1910 in Flume, California and is buried in Red Bluff. Caroline died in 1894 and is buried in a cemetery at Elder Creek California. Many of James and John children stayed in central California. Over the generations, some have moved to Washington and Oregon. A son of John and a daughter of James (cousins) married. They remained in the Paskenta/Corning area and many are still there today.* James Hill and Caroline had 8 children. Sally Ann Wilder born Mar. 12, 1866, Dixon, Ca.
